Thickness of the Flooring

Making the right decision on the thickness of the wooden floor boards you choose can make a big difference to the end result.

At 3 oak we have three thicknesses 12mm, 16mm, 21mm.

All of these three thicknesses have the same grade face oak but the top wear layer and base layer alter.

21mm Product Specification

Oak top layer thickness = 6mm (+/- 0.5mm)

Birch plywood thickness = 14.5mm (+/- 0.5mm)

Overall product thickness = 20.5mm (+/- 0.3mm)

16mm Product Specification

Top layer thickness = 4mm (+/- 0.5mm)

Plywood thickness = 11.5mm (+/- 0.5mm)

Overall product thickness = 15.5mm (+/- 0.3mm)

12mm Product Specification

Top layer thickness = 3.5mm (+/- 0.5mm)

Plywood thickness = 9mm (+/- 0.5mm)

Overall product thickness = 12.5mm (+/- 0.3mm)

If a floor is to be fitted over under-floor heating it’s recommended to use a board with a minimum width of 15mm.

If your floor is to be fitted directly to the joists its recommended to use a 21mm thickness as this board will provide much greater stability and strength.

Finally, if your new wood flooring is being fitted in a room that’s going to suffer heavy traffic it’s essential to choose a board which allows you the option to sand and refinish the floor in the years to come if you have to we recommend 21mm.
